It is a deep song, despite its few words. And I find that it is bigger than its origin, even though that certainly was a big spot on humanity. But loneliness and being away from where you feel that you belong are such fundamental feelings, such major elements of being human, that only the coldest hearts wouldn't feel something by hearing that song.
This probably is the good reason for it to have survived during 170 years or more, still being picked up and recorded by modern singers every now and then.
And thanks, I am, actually, a bit proud of these dividers – will make more of them. And I will see if I can make some "combiners" as well: something that will naturally drag the attention to the next text segment. That is more of a challenge ;)
I didn't know this trope originated in US slavery, but it makes sense. And at the same time, it is a feeling we can all relate to.
